Friends of Cancer Research Announces Election of City of Hope’s Dr. Edward S. Kim to Board of Directors

Friends of Cancer Research (Friends) is excited to announce the addition of City of Hope physician executive Edward S. Kim, M.D., M.B.A., FACP, FASCO, to its Board of Directors.

Dr. Kim, recognized as one of the top cancer experts in the nation, is Physician-in-Chief and Senior Vice President, City of Hope Orange County, Construction Industries Alliance City of Hope Orange County Physician-in-Chief Chair, and Vice Physician-in-Chief and Professor, City of Hope National Medical Center.

“We are honored to have Dr. Ed Kim join our Board of Directors,” said Friends’ Chair & Founder, Ellen Sigal. “Ed has been a tireless advocate for patients and brings deep expertise as a treating physician and researcher that will be a critical addition to our diverse board of directors.” 

Dr. Kim has been recognized among cancer care’s leading advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion. His experience and expertise will help Friends further its mission to advance treatment for patients.

A respected clinician, researcher and physician executive at one of the country’s largest cancer research and treatment organizations, Dr. Kim is a trailblazer who is eliminating practices that exclude minority populations from clinical trials and result in serious gaps in care and research.

“It is an honor to join the Board of Directors of Friends of Cancer Research and help advance collaborations that power advances in science, policy and regulation,” Dr. Kim said. “Friends and City of Hope share a commitment to speeding life-saving treatments to patients and removing barriers to comprehensive cancer care.” 

Dr. Kim is among the country’s foremost experts in molecular prognostication – which advances cancer detection and personalized therapies – for lung, head and neck cancers. He has served as a principal/co-principal investigator on numerous studies and protocols and authored/co-authored more than 250 published articles, book chapters and reviews in top-tier journals such as The Lancet, The Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer Discovery, Cancer, Nature Medicine, and Cancer Prevention Research.

As City of Hope Orange County’s chief physician, Dr. Kim is responsible for developing paradigms for translating research into clinical practice and introducing new therapies at City of Hope’s new comprehensive cancer center, planned specialty cancer hospital and network of advanced cancer care in Orange County, Calif. He leads a team of acclaimed physician-scientists who are delivering world-renowned treatment, research and cures.

Prior to joining the City of Hope, Dr. Kim was chair of Solid Tumor Oncology and Investigational Therapeutics and medical director of the Clinical Trials Office at Levine Cancer Institute, Atrium Health, in Charlotte, North Carolina.  He has held numerous leadership roles, such as tenured associate professor in the Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Kim completed his Master of Business Administration at University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School in 2020.
