NIH Director Monica Bertagnolli and Congressman Brett Guthrie to Receive the 2024 Cancer Leadership Awards

Friends of Cancer Research (Friends) is proud to announce our 2024 Cancer Leadership Award recipients: Director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Monica Bertagnolli, and U.S. Representative for Kentucky’s 2nd congressional district, the Honorable Brett Guthrie. These two extraordinary leaders will be honored on September 19, 2024, in Washington, DC.

Dr. Monica Bertagnolli will receive the Ellen V. Sigal Advocacy Leadership Award, recognizing her incredible contributions to the field of clinical oncology and translational science initiatives.

“Dr. Bertagnolli’s remarkable career has impacted the lives of countless individuals,” said Ellen Sigal, Chair and Founder of Friends of Cancer Research. “Dr. Bertagnolli has approached each of her leadership roles with great skill, intellect, kindness, and has always focused on bettering the lives of patients and their families. There is not a person more deserving to receive this award.” 

In her role as NIH Director, and past leadership roles at the National Cancer Institute and the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Dr. Bertagnolli has proven her steadfast dedication to improving the field of oncology. In addition to being a trained surgical oncologist, Dr. Bertagnolli led a laboratory that advanced our understanding of inflammation as a promoter of cancer growth.

Congressman Brett Guthrie (R-KY) will receive the Marlene A. Malek Public Service Award, honoring his commitment to advocating for policies that help improve the health of patients and communities.

“Congressman Guthrie has spent his life tirelessly working to better the lives of his constituents in Kentucky and all across the country,” said Marlene Malek, Vice Chair of Friends of Cancer Research. “Representative Guthrie’s extraordinary leadership in Congress on some of our nation’s most important issues in health has advanced science, supported patients, and is a model of bipartisan public service.” 

Congressman Guthrie serves as the Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Health Subcommittee, where he works with all sectors to advance health policies vital for patients. Congressman Guthrie exemplifies public service and has made valuable contributions to the health of the nation.
