
Bernat Navarro serves as a Science Policy Analyst at Friends of Cancer Research (Friends). Friends is an advocacy organization based in Washington, DC that drives collaboration among partners from every healthcare sector to power advances in science, policy, and regulation that speed life-saving treatments to patients.
Prior to joining Friends, Bernat worked at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in the Policy and Global Affairs Division, where he supported scientists and engineers displaced by conflict. He coordinated initiatives such as the Scientists and Engineers in Exile, securing funding, building strategic partnerships, and strengthening research networks. He also collaborated with federal agencies and international research councils to advance resilience in global education and science systems, while leading high-level convenings on sustainability challenges, including AI, livable cities, and biodiversity loss.
Prior to working at the National Academy of Sciences, Bernat served as a AAAS Science Policy Fellow on U.S. Senator Chris Coons’ energy, environment, and agriculture team. In this role, he worked at the intersection of health, climate, and equity, collaborating with federal agencies, congressional committees, and diverse stakeholders to advance key priorities, including shaping policies to address food waste, mitigate the health impacts of climate change, and promote healthcare system resilience
Bernat received his PhD in cellular and molecular medicine from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and his double BS in biotechnology and biochemistry from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
