Senate HELP Votes to Move Dr. Scott Gottlieb’s Nomination to Full Senate

Washington, DC, April 27, 2017 – Friends of Cancer Research (Friends) would like to thank Chairman Alexander and the Senate HELP Committee for voting to report Dr. Scott Gottlieb’s nomination to be FDA commissioner favorably to the full Senate for a vote. The committee vote was 14-9 in favor of moving the nomination forward.

Friends urges immediate confirmation by the Senate and looks forward to working with Dr. Gottlieb on vital issues that directly impact patients’ lives. Dr. Gottlieb not only has the experience that will be critical to expand upon the agency’s important work, but has firsthand experience at the FDA and as a physician that has treated patients understands the breadth of work that needs to be achieved on their behalf.

Dr. Gottlieb’s strong scientific base and in-depth knowledge of key regulatory processes will be key to his success in this position. Due to his knowledge and experience, Dr. Gottlieb is the right person to ensure the FDA keeps pace with science and innovation without sacrificing the safety and efficacy gold standard established by the agency. This was noted by the broad support of more than 20 organizations in a letter urging his immediate confirmation.

As Dr. Gottlieb’s nomination now moves to the full Senate for a vote, Friends asks for immediate action from Senate Majority Leader McConnell and confirmation by the Senate.
