Washington DC – Friends of Cancer Research (Friends) joins the nation in mourning the loss of former Democratic Representative John Dingell of Michigan.

“For decades, the country counted on the veracity and leadership of John during some of our country’s most pivotal moments,” said Ellen Sigal, Chair, and Marlene Malek, Vice Chair, of Friends. “While we mourn his passing, we celebrate his life as a statesman, tireless public servant, unwavering champion of biomedical research, and a dear friend.”

John Dingell served in Congress for 59 years during which he changed the lives of millions of patients by altering the course of science, research, and treatment through his work on some of the most pivotal health care legislation, including the establishment of Medicare and the passing of the Affordable Care Act.

In 1996, his wife, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell was a driving force in the founding of Friends of Cancer Research. She served on Friends’ Board of Directors for more than 15 years before being elected to Congress in 2014.
